KANK - Damn, I broke my vow!

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna - well, that was all what the movie was about - people breaking their marriage vows. And I broke another vow, and I feel like banging my head in the nearest wall for doing so - I really shouldn't waste my money on such Hindi movies, desperately hoping these kind of directors will get more mature. Though this movie was a whiff of fresh air from the usual crap Johar churns out (you know I'm not a big fan!), it ultimately succumbs to be one of them too.
Now, if this contains spoilers, don't curse me for giving it away - after all, I'd rather you don't watch the movie. Why I agreed to watch this movie was plainly because my friends said it'd be fun, which well, it was in a way - we did have good fun passing random comments. Now, I just feel sad I should have saved this $11 for a second viewing of JoK to hear the songs in Dolby sound, probably.

SRK's bitterness in the whole movie, though again, a refreshing change from his usual ( I mean in Johar and Chopra movies) flirting with girls, the happy-go-lucky dude was so irritating that I should say he quite succeeded in portraying his character. Wonder how (and why the HELL!) Rani falls for this chap instead of her husband Rishi (Abhishek, nicely done!). Preity's character was great too, for a change she wasn't a woman who wept and crumbled when she learnt of her husband's affair, but instead asked him to get out. Whew, seriously.

Another thing I was desperately praying for was they shouldn't set Preity and Abhishek together, I would definitely have hunted down Karan if he had done that. Instead, both move on with their lives with ease (though the complications towards the end of the movie were unwarranted for).
As usual, the movie had its dose of 'comedy' and some relief in the name of Amitabh, Kirron Kher and the cute little kid who played SRK's son.

At the end of the whole 3 1/2 hours (without an interval, dammit, I hate these cinemas!), it left a bitter taste in my mouth. I'd probably have even accepted it if they had stopped the movie a few minutes before the actual climax (I'd been sure it was ending then, and really believed Karan Johar had grown up!!), but no, it goes on for another half hour and killed any good opinion left I had of the director and the movie.

I'd say : Don't pay more than Rs 60 if you want to watch the movie. Seriously. I'd rather say you watch the movie only if you love to watch Rani's right eye (only!!) filling and shedding tears. Even the glycerine doesn't know how to work. Gosh, what do I say, it's Johar afterall.

You have my sympathies...I nearly landed up watching this movie thanks to my 2 friends who wanted to drool over the male leads...Thanks to the show timing we picked Miami Vice (not a gr8 one for Mann, but better than KANK any day!)...I heard from someone this would be somewhat like closer...I laughed my head off...Johar...that sissy....and closer...give me a break!...looks like I was right after all...that chap doesn't have it in him to make movies of that intensity. And what was different about this one, the top of someone's list was Priety's 'makeover'...Seriously, the only innovation bollywood can bring in is the heroine's hair do, eye make up dresses lipstick shoes....god save us!

Vani Viswanathan said...

harish,
lol, what to do, sometimes we have unrealistic expectations - a sensible movie from johar, for instance!

vishnu,
everyone seems to have understood the post, guess you're the one who's lost senses here! Doped, eh?

Anu said...

yeah..liked in the sense, it was the better of all johar's movies I have watched till date..Moreover, Abhishek was CHARMING! :D...But stand alone impression of the movie, tho..:|

you didn't like the movie?! that is sad. i absolutely loved it. i think it is a wonderful movie. this could very well turn out to be a path breaking movie. i think it deals with the problems faced by numerous couples nowadays and gives the best solution possible. and this is just my personal opinion :)

Vani Viswanathan said...

Ramya,
At your own risk!!

Shobana,
Nope, Preity and Abhishek have nothing to do with each other!

Vani Viswanathan said...

Anu,
Haha, that ways, this is the most mature, definitely.. and Abhishek was definitely charming!

Inder,
I liked that he has chosen to deal with infidelity in a marriage, but don't like the way it was ended - everything seemed to be candyfloss nice.

Yeah, hindi movies stink (and if u ask me i would say that the same is true with tamil ones).. but once in a blue-moon something good comes like rang de basanti etc. now that you have forewarned, I wouldn't watch this, Danke :)

hindi movies ...... other than the gorgeous gals and the tear-jerker love stories, they dun seem to have anything else .... sorta like candy-floss ... sweet to a fault, flossy and mostly juz hot air .... and isn't it "great" how the stories always have a fairytale ending ..... seems like they lost track of reality somewhere along the line ....

anyway have u seen "Thank you for smoking" .... quite possibly the funniest movie of the year .... highly recommend it .... and the palestine movie "paradise now" .... try watching movies other than tamil and hindi ones ... *grin*

Welcome to the club.I have promised myself this would be the last KJ movie that I would see. Btw, seems the movie is a big commercial hit and expected to gross more than Rs.60 crores.

hmm, sounds like the consensus opinion. I had a friend call me yesterday to say "Even if you get free tickets, refuse 'em!"

//I'm on the way to becoming an English movie conneiseur!

just english movies ... hollywood is barely better than bollywood or kollywood .... how about the other countries and languages ... french, korean, japanese, italian, dutch, arabic, african, chinese or how about even local singaporean movies .... dun juz stick with the mainstream movies, try some indie ones and u might be in for a pleasnt surprise ....

I thought I'd post this before reading other ppl's comments...
I liked the movie...a lot...an what makes it work for the most are the male actors...Shahrukh and Abhishek. Preity's role is pretty microscopic but what she does is justified , something we've not seen before (... she slaps shahrukh...brrr!). Shahrukh plays a big jerk...and that's how real people can be when they are frustrated.Abhishek's just this nice sort of person...but I dont figure Rani at all (who'd dump such a loving husband for bitter , withering shahrukh??!!).
The scenes with Amitabh and Shahrukh were really good...hilarious when it was funny...and vibrating with tension when serious.
It would get a bit cheesy at times, that I'd agree with.
That's my take on it...and really...the songs in Dolby were amazing...
