No, this is not about the recent reservation of admissions into IIT. I'm really wondering.
IIT has been a magic word for everyone around all the while I was in school. Everyone went for IIT classes, but I didn't bother, mostly because I wasn't interested. It held no fascination for me.
But now I want to know.
Most of the engineers in my university here who're from India came here only because they didn't get the course they wanted in IIT or in the IIT they wanted. I feel like the odd one out when I tell them I didn't even attempt the JEE being a Science student, that too from CBSE and from apparently one of the prestigious schools in Chennai. Wonder why!
Now I wish I could go there to see what it's all about. I've definitely lost what it needs to get into an IIT, out of touch with Science or Maths for almost two years now. My university has exchange programmes with IITs, but yeah, IIT has nothing to offer for students from my course :(
Why, is technology only connected to engineering? Engineers need communication, and we communication scholars need technology! And yeah, IIT will need an (about-to-be!) advertising or PR professional like me! :P

I made the mistake of attending those classes as well as the JEE. Screwed up the JEE badly. But I guess it was a good thing 'coz I could concentrate on the CBSE boards...
wat IIT students achieve by studying there, u can achieve in ur own field vani by excelling in whatever u do //thumbsup
I did write about the same thing, some time back.
well.. graduating from IIT certainly has a lot of good things attached to it, its an instant recognition of having gone through some of the toughest systems and coming out successfully and now that its famous all over the world, its an assurity (if u dont screw up big time later) in itself of a good life. Not that u cant succed otherwise. Eventually it comes down to the individual.. Do read my comment abt ur last post in the comments section there

No wonder, most of the PR indian men here are IIT engineers.. I've always wondered about that. Me and my friends classify them (Indian PR men) as experts/smart men. So, let's just say, I see an indian men with specs on and dress smart.. ting ting, "oh, he must be an engineer la" Whoop!

The IIT-tag has a charm attached with it... most companies who come to IIMs giv preference to students who are from IITs - even though the joc requires 0% tech knowledge! The point here is, the companies are sure that, having completed 4 years successfully at IITs, the students will be good!
it's not for name's sake that one prepares for JEE.IIT transforms one ordinary individual into a whiz(sometimes an engg geek too).
and i beg to differ on the statement "technology connected to engineering".In fact the word technology is now being used to refer to computer-related and electronics-related stuff,only and this doesnt encompass machine tools,gears etc.

Obviously, today's meaning of technology according to you, is wrong!! Doesn't IIT have other branches of engineering? And my university too has a 'technology' in it....and we still have communication studies and the pure sciences and arts...and mind you, this communication is not the electronics one!
No, no, what Sheks meant was that Technology has come to refer to Computers/IT related stuff these days. For instance, most news related websites have a "Tech" category. 95% of the news is related to Computers/IT/Electronics.
So technology isn't synonymous with Engineering, rather it pertains only to Computers and IT.
He is right - "technology" doesn't after all include other branches of Engineering.
My case point is always this: Premier institutions have a great reputation, because of the quality of students who get in. The institutes themselves have very little to offer.

Yeah, I got that, and what I meant was that this meaning of technology we're assigning today is wrong! It goes beyond Computers and IT, and sadly, those meanings aren't realised!
IIT is all about, geeky looking guys, not so hot galz, and a whole bunch of comfort, and entertainment ...

this is an old fogie who went to iit madras 1968-1973. in those times, iit was not a big deal. we did our p.u. and by accident i heard about iit jee ad that came in the newspaper. wrote the jee exam with nary a prep. had 5 (yes it was 5 years then) years of fun staying in the hostel. the fee was 25 rupees per month (cheap even by those standards). the mess bill came to 100 rupees a month, reasonable but not cheap. but 5 years of carefree life if you don't care about your studies. had the first chance to meet guys from all over india, which itself was a great experience. my classmates were somewhat arrogant, in that when we had the annual entertainment festival, they would boo anything desi and classical. after 32 years, i visited iit madras again and knocked the doors of the kid who occupied my hostel room. he was from andhra, was interested only in learning software, looked forward towards earning lotsa money, and was horrified when i told him about our casual lifestyle and attitude towards studies then. nowadays, when somebody identifies me as an ex iit'an i profusely apologize as i cannot meet the expectations. times have changed.:)
Hey hey... dont feel bad or anything... after coming to iit I'm sitting here totally bored swatting flies... there's nothing here in IIT except the name... Ev1's the same human... with all their idiosyncrasies and stupidities... Its really bad if you are not that eccentric and end up sitting in the midst of a hundred eccentrics...
i never knew the worth of this institute till i passed my engineering when one day i got to stay in iit when my friend was persuing his MS in iit chennai. Then realised whatz iit and its life teaches a boy or a gal to turn into a man or woman when they pass out at the age of 21. I didnt mean the literal meaning but the life of 4 years do really change the outlook of a student that i missed by doing in some other college. It turns a student to look beyond horizon. and i found my friend's zest changing before my eyes while he did his MS. unfortunate i didnt give GATE after my BE as well Jee. There is no point in regretting now.. and i am carrying the life in the way i can beyond IIT. The route might have been shorter now it is longer.
Actually you make quite a good point when you state Engineers need communication. I believe that's a common sentiment echoed around the world.
And what is your course work in, for a lack of exchange programs?
While I, not being an IITian myself, am not quiet qualified to comment, I will definitely say I don't regret it either. 4 years later, if you end up at the same place an IITian ends up in, all differences cease to exist.
