Cupid's day out

Yipppeee..it’s Valentines’ day!!! It’s the best day in the whole year…the most beautiful one, the one specially dedicated for those in love by a saint who actually laid his life for the sake of love…this precious is love!
Try as I might, I’m unable to go on with this gibberish. Yeah, it’s Valentines’ day. SO??? My college campus is studded with heart shaped things wherever I go; boy, oh boy, it’s irritating! A simple day being exaggerated beyond limits. Things are hyped as it is here, and now there are valentine stuff in every direction. Huge hearts, goodie bags for couples soaked in ‘love’, soft toys, key chains and random things talking about love, that wonderful feeling…
I’m not an unromantic creature – but it’s this essentiality of display of affection in every possible way that really freaks me out. I saw flower bouquets for $50 in the supermarket and got stumped – can someone be crazy enough to spend so much for flowers! Better ways than giving cuddly dolls, heart shaped random things or flower bouquets that cost crazy?!
Wonder where some simple, beautiful things of showing one’s affection have gone – nobody wants to take the pains of making a card for their valentine, for instance – a simple gesture that I think goes miles into showing affection!
This is also the time of the year when most of the single people get slightly depressed – can’t blame them with all this hype and hoopla around – but being single can also be awesome fun! One doesn’t have to meet your ‘other’ for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and spend every minute you can afford with him..one can be happy passing random comments about all those people together (you’re better qualified if you’re single ;) )
Well, for whatever it’s worth though, for all of you out there, Happy Valentines’ Day!
~ ~ A romantic ;) (Yeah, I am, in a different way!)

//I saw flower bouquets for $50 in the supermarket and got stumped

sorta surprised ..... i haven't been to a supermarket in a while and to my limited knowledge, the only flower i knew was being sold at NTUC or Cold Storage was the cauliflower ... had no idea tat cauliflower is the latest "in" flower .... *grin* .... trust me, u could probably save a bunch of money if u did ur flower shopping at the wet market .... As for me, i always believe tat the best things in life are free soo if u happen to see a guy tearing out frangipani or morning glory from a roadside tree, tat would be me .... then again, i am a pathetic, fat slob who is probably never gonna get a valentines' date ... oh well, at least it saves me the trouble and the money ....

//nobody wants to take the pains of making a card for their valentine,

first the pink doll and now u are saying u make ur own greeting cards .... frankly how old are u ... trust me, crayon scribblings and pasted on macroni might seem cute when its from a five year old but u are probably asking to get kicked by ur date when tat's all u get for her on valentines' date ..... sooo unless u are into the whole SM thing and probably love getting beaten up by ur date, i wouldn't advise the above mentioned suggestion ... it's most definitely hazardous to health .... *grin*

Vani Viswanathan said...

Saranya Kishore,
Yeah!! Everyone around in my college today was carrying a bouquet of flowers or a single rose... *rolls eyes*

my_days_are_counted,
Umm, is this the only day? What happened to the anniversary, birthday, so on? :P

Vani Viswanathan said...

chakra sampath,
Haha, do you know how many of my friends get slightly upset they're single? ;)

Harish,
Boy, you seem to be really tensed! Shanti, shanti! :)
Hope you enjoyed the day, anyways!

Vani Viswanathan said...

shreedhar,
umm...exactly whose thoughts are you referring to as crazy here? ;) Explain, please!! :)

the woman,
God, every mall is filled with heart-shaped balloons till i can fall sick seeing them! :(

Vani Viswanathan said...

Sandhya,
Definitely not wrong to celebrate one day for love...but what really irritates me is the narrow-minded definition of 'love' we have around here...it's not just for couples, don't you think so?

fun2fun,
Kandippa...hehe, unga college-la enna nadandhadhu? ;)

Vani Viswanathan said...

Dante,
NTUC JP has a bouquet for $50 in its fridge!! :|
That's where i saw it and got scandalised!
>>>then again, i am a pathetic, fat slob who is probably never gonna get a valentines' date
the single guy's syndrome, eh? ;)
>>>frankly how old are u
there are some things i don't want to grow out of! :) Those things I mentioned were just some small, cute and significant gestures that really please me....
And i definitely wouldn't kick a guy for not giving me presents! :o In fact, he'd better take care if he's approaching me with a heart-shaped balloon or a silly bouquet! ;)
(Oh God, do i sound like the most unromantic girl ever? ;) )

Anonymous said...

//the single guy's syndrome, eh? ;)

hmmm, not exactly .... more like the single ugly guy syndrome .... u would think tat looking like Quasimodo's (hunchback of notre dame) uglier twin brother might actually get u some attention but guess s'porean gals aren't really into freaks at the moment .... *grin*

//small, cute and significant gestures that really please me....

hmmmm ... with u it's either small, cute things or tiny, little things .... *wink* .... u know wat i am getting at ....

under the starry night skies, sitting on parallel swings in a playground with a cornetto cone (ice cream) and just enjoying the silence ... now tat's my idea of a nice valentine .... would be more spectacular if there fireworks going off but tat only happens in movies, rite .... *grin*

(p.s. most unromantic gal .... well maybe not .... at least u dun sound like the typical ditzy gal who is into heart shaped ballons and sorts (tat's always a positive sign in my book, at least ;p) ... *grin* ... and wat's the deal with the association between heart and love ... still dun get it ... love is an emotion which is produced by the brain so where does the heart enters the picture ... )

Vani Viswanathan said...

Dante,
I was talking about small gestures, nothing else, hey! Stop 'adulterating' my blog! lol...
And well, I personally find most Singaporean girls very girly...they're more like dainty creatures, dressed in cute clothes! So maybe if you also pay enough attention to your dressing sense, they might notice you! ;)
As for the association between heart and brain, umm, well, how does the brain function if the heart is not? (Psst...I know it's one of the most illogical arguments to make, but there are some emotions I attribute to my heart than to the brain!)

I ain't saying tat they aren't nice to look at .... in fact, tat happens to be one of my fav. hobbies but talking with them is another thing ..... they have no clue abt anything and when u try to make subtle jokes, they juz stare back at u with a barbie-doll expression .... sorta makes u think tat getting a root-canal is much more interesting and less boring at least .... *grin*

//If you wear those things, God save you!!;)

i am starting to run out of options here .... hmmmm, maybe i should start to emulate ramarajan's fashion sense ... *wink* .... now where can i buy bright pink and neon green short sleeve shirts in s'pore .... or maybe u can help me get a few from chennai .... ;p

very simple ma......See if you are served with cold coffee and if the guy delays the order then its gona get warm, yet it will taste wonderful, but if you order hot brewed coffee like cappuccino and if the delays then its gona get cold and it will taste horrible, the other day in CCD i had a cafe frappe and it tasted well even though it lost its chillness in a while, but the joodi next to me, they ordered mocha and you should have seen their face when they finally had their coffee after *ahem* passionate valentines day greetings.....

And your blog is so popular! It's my first time here. Didn't know that many people from NTU blogged :)
