Reviewing....

Some mystical forces are into play. I somehow find the temptation to blog soaring only when I study economics!!
Today I'm blogging about one of my favourite movies of all time (to while away time). It's Kannathil Mutthamittal (A Peck on the cheek). It traces the story of a little girl who is being brought up by a writer and his wife in Chennai happily until she is told on her ninth birthday that she was adopted. A very beautiful story, and...this post will be a little long.
What amazing portrayals by each person who acted in the movie! I don't know why this movie is somehow not appreciated as some other movies of Mani are, like Mouna Ragam. Being a Mani freak, I cannot understand how this movie somehow is missed out.
Madhavan especially, was amazing in the movie. Yeah, one thing is that I like him whatever he does, but I think he has put in a lot of effort for this movie and it's paid too. Who would imagine a typical lover-boy playing the father of three kids? A very neat essay by Madhavan, especially his portrayal of being a very short tempered person who, though, dotes on his adopted daughter. His short temper somehow never irritated me, one reason though could be that I was watching the whole movie with the "Hey this is ManiRatnam's movie" bias!
What is great in any Mani Ratnam movie is the naturalness of most of the situations that happen. In this movie again, the cute scene when Simran goes and quietly whispers into Keerthana's (the little girl) ears "En Amudha kuttiku Happy Happy Birthday" reminded me of how my mother wakes me up every year on my birthday. And all the kurumbu that the three kids do is all so natural and seems to be lifted directly out of life. The scenes where Keerthana goes and complains to her father saying her mother doesn't like her et al. are too good! And Madhavan's "so-cutely-fatherly" behaviour just made me long to be a kid again so I could go enjoy with my dad like this again!
And to top it all, is genius A.R. Rahman at work!!!! A.R. somehow gives his best to Mani Ratnam inevitably!!! That just makes this movie another of my favourite combinations at work - madhavan, mani ratnam and a.r.rahman, the other two being alaipayuthey and aitha ezhuthu. Aitha Ezhuthu is another movie which I feel did not get the recognition it deserved. Yes, it did have many shortcomings and disappointed mani fans, but it did not deserve such a let-down! In this movie again, Mani brings out so many natural things, lifted - out - of - life scenes. The spontaneity of the character of Siddharth, which was my favourite, was really great. Many people are surprised that I liked his character the best, of all people, but I do quite have my own justifications. What he is, I think, just truly represents how the youth today are, or at least majority of the well bred, (quite) spoilt youth. His dreams of going to the U.S. while wanting to please his dad for a little while by lying that he would pursue his I.A.S., I think, just represents us. Most of the youth today want to please our parents while ensuring we don't leave our dreams into thin air, and I feel Mani has done a great job in bringing that out. Here again, Madhavan showed his acting skills, easily switching from one mood to another, being fiercely angry enough to kill his friend to crying to his wife the next. And of course, Surya....a nice portrayal of the very committed person - to his ambitions and to love.
There was quite a huge mistake in the hindi version, though. I somehow felt that Abishek Bacchan wasn't able to bring out the emotions as successfully as Madhavan could. Ajay Devegan, again, was a bad choice to play a student, isn't he too old? It's as bad as asking Ajith to play a college student, if not worse! Maybe we can discount for the fact that Ajay is a better actor! (Sorry if I'm offending any die-hard Ajith fans!!)
Sorry again for the people who haven't watched either of these movies....but I'd say Kannathil Mutthamittal is something you should not miss!!!!

I'm a Mani-ARR maniac too. (yerkaname soleerukeno? paravala po! kandukaadhe!)

But I don't know abt Maddy's potrayal of anger though. I found the scene where he says "Enna nambi ungala yaaruya vara sonnadhu. Unmela mudhala nambikkai vei." very forced. It didn't seem as natural as the other scenes in the movie. The last scene was extremely beautiful though.. theatre-la enakku munaadi ukaandha ponnunga ellam azha aarambichutaanga.. :) bayandhuten!

Aayitha Ezhuthu.. I agree!!

I agree V. Kannathil Muthamittal is an amazing movie. I also find aayudha ezhuthu to be pretty good as well, but i can't compare it with kannathil muthamittal. Simran does an awesome job as well in that one, and she looks good doin it too! certainly, Mani deserves all the hype cuz he's simply good! And try some economics as well ;)

I too agree that these 2 r great movies. It also depends on the timing of the movie release which counts for its success.
Don't u think that Trisha acted well than KAreena. Especially when Siddharth calls her for a coffee, jsut compare these scenes with Hindi and Tamil and u guys understnad what I mean.

Kannathil was one of his best films - with few compromises. But then people who appreciate these kind of movies don't make the repeat audience category. At most you and me will see the movie once or twice. A hero dominated commerical movie or a love story will get repeat audiences.

Ayidha Ezhuthu was very different in the way the three personalities were portrayed.
We can see those three characters in everyday life. innum solla pona those three characters exist in each one of us to some extent.
But what let the movie down was the circuitous narrative.
I think a straight forward narrative would have done wonders for that film.
But then hindsight is always perfect :-)

Btw i loved the way Mani handled questions in his DVD release function in Feb 26 at Nungambakkam Landmark.

yay!!!
so i have 4 more people who share these views!!!
ya harish, i felt this scene was a bit overdone, in the sense, well, wasn't he simply getting angry! but given the fact that he plays a writer in the movie, maybe we can accept his "dialogues"!!
sriram, true, mani deserves every bit of the hype he gets!!!
reflex, same pinch!! even i felt trisha had so much more fizz and enthu in her than kareena...and even vivek, when he tells kareena that he wants to watch the niagra falls holding her hands etc., i think siddarth did a much much better job!!!
prabu karthik, haha i read that interview in the internet and given the mani freak i am, i luved it too! (doesn't this show HOW jobless i am!!!)

I love Mani Ratnams' movies. I saw these two movies in Telugu and liked both of them.
KM is a much much better movie though it didnt get the response it deserved.

AR s' scores for KM are really superb though he is not upto his mark as far as Yuva is concerned.

the 6 minute Park scene, the shoot-out between the military & the LTTE is simply awesome! no doubt it is a wonderful movie.
but its not fun until someone starts an argument. so, i say, Trisha can't act. more so bcos she is from chennai :P ... now defend that kovam-patty people :P :P

While I agree that AE is a great movie, Madhavan does seem a little too sophisticated to play the streetgoon. He tried to do his "Personality counselling from NCC" using Madras Bashai. We all know how that works. His sincerity needs appreciated, though.

I definitely agree that Ajay Devgun is a much(infinitely) better actor than Thala(illa) Ajit. Ajit should concentrate on reducing his flab and get deep into character-roles like Vijaykumar wisely chose to do many many years ago. Today, apart from essaying brilliant character-roles, Vijaikumar is also richer than most leading men and is in a much more peaceful position in the industry. Anyway, Ajit movies are meant to flop and are getting defined accordingly. He should now leave the Hero material to people that look good or act good or are called rajinikant or all the three.

Thalaikku vaisu aaidchu...mairellaam nerchi pochu...kootti kalchi paatha...thalaikku pathu kaasu kooda seraadhu...

Well, my 2c. I am a big time Mani fan and love all his movies. I think his worst is still a cut way above the rest.

In KM, as the audience, I could not empathise with the Keerthana character. She was irritating and just bugging. If I were Simran, I wouldnt have even made the trip to Ceylon. While the acting by Madhavan and Simran were excellent, the audience didnt feel one with the characters.

In Ayudha Ezhuthu, while Madhavan/Abhishek had done a great job with the character, the segment was long and uninteresting. Also, the character shown as a brute, but whose wife put up with crap and beating and all was hard to digest. It is definitely a true reflection of things in India where wife-beaters continue to get all the attention and action from their wives, but still sucked as a character in a big movie. I was happy when Madhavan's character made the transition to a pure villain from the initial anti-hero premise.

Good movies, but could have been much better, esp coming from Mani's stables.

Amidst all the adulation for Maniratnam, do think if this supposed master movie-maker has made an 'impactful' movie...how did u feel after seeing a 'Mahanadhi','Kurudhippunal' or an 'Anbe Sivam'??Weren't u imbued in the 'spirit' of the movies??!!! Mani probably barely managed it with only 'Roja' & 'Anjali'.... I THINK HE'S CERTAINLY NOT WORTH THE HYPE & HOOPLA!!! Happy to hear others' reflections...

As much a big Madhavan fan I am, I must honestly say that Abhishek Bachan played that character much better than Madhavan and brought it to life. Nice post.
